I have been in lapidary work since the early 1990's. I began with cabochons, cutting blood stone, agates, amethysts. I cabbed sapphires and emeralds. When that was not challenging enough for me I bought my faceting machine and taught myself the art of faceting. Beginning with quartz, glass, and synthetic corundum (sapphire and ruby) as well as synthetic spinel and beryl (Chatham emerald). As I gained more experience I moved into natural gems: garnets, spinels, tanzanite, tourmaline, sapphire, emerald. I spent quite a bit of time at any mineral show searching for something unique and affordable.
In the late 1990's I turned my hobby a different direction to create two US patents: 5,748,389 and 5,917,655 [the prism]; I faceted the prototypes myself.
